"BRAVE START"

CATHEDRAL FUND

CENTENNIAL APPEAL

LIST OF DONATIONS

The latest list of donations and promises, received to September 23, shows that the total amount of new money in the diocesan fund and the citizens' fund towards the building of an Anglican Cathedral in Wellington and for general church purposes in. the diocese is £52,152 5s 3d. There is also available £27,000 from the old cathedral fund, which if added to the fresh money gives a grand total of £79,152 5s 3d. The £27,000 from the old fund, however, is, for the purposes of the appeal, being treated as an entirely separate amount, for the reason that, although the appeal for the building of the cathedral is for £200,000, the actual estimated cost has been announced as £230,000. Because of this the £27,000 has been set aside against the extra £30,000 not covered by the appeal. The contributions received for general church purposes go to the Bishop's Fighting Fund, the amount aimed at in this connection being £100,000. Of the new money subscribed to date, approximately £10,000 is to be allocated to this fund. Reference is made in the latest issue of "The Church Chronicle" to the fine response to date from the parishes which have been visited by Bishop Holland, and to the sapping of his Lordship's strength as a result of his wholehearted efforts in the past few weeks, culminating in his medical advisers ordering him to take a complete rest in the country. In a note the Yen. Archdeacon. W. Bullock, VicarGeneral of the diocese, states -that everyone will agree that a good and brave start has been made towards the goal of £300,000. "But the effort," the Archdeacon continues, "has taken toll of the Bishop's strength, reduced, as it already was, by his accident earlier in the year. Though he worked vigorously up to Sunday, September 25, the doctors have insisted on his going right away for a complete rest until October 15. The doctors' decision is wise and I am sure we shall all pray that the leader 'of our campaign will soon be in .possession of his normal strength and return to plunge once more into the task." Archdeacon Bullock adds that the Bishop is insistent on visiting every parish before Christmas and that the dates for visits to the remaining parishes are to be rearranged.
