MARANUICLUB

SUCCESSFUL YEAR

A successful year, both in the competitive field and as regards membership and finance, is recorded in the twenty-seventh annual report of the Maranui Surf and Life-saving Club. The year proved an outstanding one also in the success of the final efforts to relieve the club of its financial obligation. Altogether 27 awards of the Royal Life-saving Society and the New Zealand Surf Association were gained by the club during the season. Bronze and surf medallion classes were conI ducted for the benefit of pupils of Rongotai College, there being no obligation of club membership. These classes proved very popular, and 18 awards were gained by the pupils. The membership of the club stands at 150, of which 57 are seniors, 21 juniors, and 11 life members, 25 country members, 8 honorary members, and 28 vice-presidents and office-holders. An extremely successful competitive season resulted in the club winning three senior New Zealand championships, all seven Wellington titles, one West Coast title, and three interclub events. Altogether 42 teams were entered in 23 events during the season, and the club secured 13 first and 7 second placings. The personnel of the teams was selected from all active members, and everyone was given an equal opportunity of competing in club teams. The success of Ihe teams has been very gratifying to the club officials, supporters, and members-alike and it is to be hoped that still greater efforts will be turned to good account by the memebrs, and thus place the club in a position second to none in New Zealand. From a financial aspect the year was a remarkable one, as the amount collected indicated the keenness of the members and supporters. A credit balance was maintained, and the majority of the outstanding debentures were redeemed. The replacement of the surf lifeboat now 15 years old, is expected during the coming season, a large part of the money required having been raised by club members. _,„ ... , P. R. Malthus won the Wellington 880 yards championship and finished second in the 440 yards title race. Three members of the club, J. i. Clark, D. K. Evans, and H. C. Downs, were selected as members of the flist New Zealand representative life-sav-ing team to leave these shores.
