TO WHITEN PIANO KEYS

To clean the keys of a piano, rub them over with methylated spirit, states an exchange. Use a clean rag to apply the spirit and polish them at the same time. If the keys are very dirty, mix a solution of potash and whiting to a paste and spread over the keys. Leave this on for about twenty-four hours. When removed, it will be found that the keys are as white as they were when new. A long line of motor-cars travelling over Evans Pass Road and a very wellpatronised train leaving the Christchurch railway station for the port on Monday afternoon betokened some I unusual happenings in Lyttelton, states the "Press." The big influx of visitors was due to the fact that the Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Squadron and the officers of H.M.S. Achilles, which has been at Lyttelton for some days, were "at home" on the ship, and extended kindly hospitality to a large number of guests. Visits of warships to Lyttelton are comparatively rare events and a party on board ship has, for Canterbury residents, the charm of novelty. The Visitors, were welcomed at the gangway by Commodore I. G. Glennie, and he and | the officers of the ship saw to it that all their guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The music of the ship's band added to the cheeriness of a very pleasant gathering.
