HOME OF COMPASSION

Friends and well-wishers of the I Home of Compassion, Island Bay are invited to the "gift day" which will be held at the Home on Saturday. An annual event which is eagerly anticipated by both inmates and supporters of the Home, the function this year promises to repeat its former successes. The Artillery Band will be in attendance between the hours of 2 o'clock and 4 —the duration of the function —and the Home will be open to inspection. Afternoon tea will be served by members of the women's committee and by the Sisters. Those who are travelling to the "Home by tram will be met at the stop by private cars which will drive them up the hill and obviate a rather steep climb. Funds will be used to finance extensions of the existing building.

BEFORE AND AFTER

First take note of these points:—

1. Before setting off for your first 10-minute swim apply a good powder cream. It will keep your face smooth until you get there. Use a little lip- j stick (and eye-black, too, if you must), but don't powder. 2. A brisk walk will loosen up your muscles and reduce the possibility of cramp. 3. A net and rubber cap will keep your hair tidy, and now—you're ready for your 10-minute swim. 4. Don't waste precious minutes flopping about in the water—this wastes energy and exhausts you without giving your body exercise value. There's no time for this in your 10-minute swim. If you must do it—use the bathroom at home. 5. And there's neither pleasure nor sense in standing about. Get in and keep in—you've only 10 minutes. A GOOD ROUTINE. If you're a swimmer—set off across the bath, then turn about and swim back again—swim strongly for 3 minutes. Then spend three minutes diving— first from the edge, then from higher and higher up. You will now be well exercised and fit for a sharp ball game or play-about. But three minutes of this is enough. If you can't swim, hold on to the bar and kick out your legs. Keep it up for three minutes. [ Then wade out until the water is shoulder high, and work your arms vigorously for three minutes. Now play around and exercise for three minutes. Stretch your arms and legs to full length. It feels good and does you good. ■ After one final minute's plunge you come out from your 10-minute swim feeling invigorated and fit. AFTER YOUR SWIM. 1. Rub down hard and well. Getting yourself really dry will make your skin glow healthily and improve surface* circulation. 2. Remember you've been using muscles not otherwise so well exercised, so massage aches away with a little oil on the finger-tips. Rub well in. 3. A hot drink will round off perfectly your first—and all the 10----minute swims ever after.

PRINCESS ROYAL HONOURED

British dairy farmers for the first time in history are to have a woman at their head, states the "Daily Telegraph." Two thousand of them in all parts of the country have invited the King's only sister, the Princess Royal, through their organisation, the British Dairy Farmers' Association, to act as their president for 1939. No woman has ever played such a | distinctive part before in the agricultural life of England. The Princess, who, following the example of her Danish grandmother, Queen Alexandra, is keenly interested in dairy management, has acquired considerable knowledge of it from her home farm on the Harewood estates in Yorkshire. ..: The ..Princess;.; hopes.; to preside over, the dairy farmers-next year when they go to London for their annualshow.
