AUSTRALIAN RACING
FAVOURITE LOSES RIDER
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)
SYDNEY, September 29. There was a Turf sensation today when it was learnt that the jockey H. Skidmore was unable, because of illness, to come to Sydney to ride Nightguard in the Epsom Handicap. All the good riders are already engaged, and the owner, Mr. A. Morrow, is having difficulty in securing a suitable substitute. Nightguard remains the popular choice for the Epsom, while Stretto, Young Idea, and Mohican are much respected. The clash between Royal Chief and Avenger in the Colin Stephen Stakes is expected to be the titbit at Randwick on Saturday. Avenger is vastly improved, but it is expected that Royal Chief will triumph. Nuffield is favoured for the Derby and is likely to have most opposition from Limulet and Aeolus. The Derby field is the smallest since 1906, and the Epsom smaller than usual. Dominion-bred juveniles expected to be prominent next week are Beau Mari and Folk Song.
