DISQUIETING REPORT

CHRISTCHURCH, September 28. A challenge to the Government to deny that it had received a disquieting report on the social security scheme from the Treasury Department was issued by Mr. S. G. Holland, National Party candidate for re-election to Christchurch North, in an address this evening. • Mr. Holland, who roundly criticised the scheme, said the report dealt with the financial capacity of the country to meet the commitments involved and, instead of being submitted to the committee investigating the scheme for the information of members and the public, it had' been pigeon-holed in the Department of Finance. While asserting the view of the National Party that the first charge against the State was the care of the aged, sick, and poor, Mr. Holland raised the following points against the Government's scheme: — •••' „ j 1. There had been no satisfactory explanation from the Government of the financial side of the scheme. 2. Opposition requests for evidence during the investigation of the scheme were refused. ! 3. The scheme was opposed by the Director-General' of I Health. 4. Extra taxation to meet the scheme would be necessary A.- • ... 5 The medical profession'could not remain happy under the Government's scheme, 6. The scheme would result in poorer service. 7. The existence of the specialist was threatened. 8. There was great anxiety for the fate of private services. 9. The existence of friendly societies was threatened.
