WIDE RANGE OF DISCUSSION

A meeting of the Dominion executive of the National Council of Women of New Zealand was held in Wellingtori. The Dominion president, Miss M. Trent, presided, and there were preselj|. Miss Frances, L. Miss Trent extended a 'welcome, to delegates, and briefly outlined what had Been accomplished during the year.'/:? She suggested-that branches should- form emergency committees, which would offer to; help, the civic authorities if needed in the event of war. She mentioned: that the N.C.W. had been -very fortunate in being represented at the International Conference at Edinburgh by such a capable member of the council as Miss I. M. Jamieson. It was gratifying that the .Government had decided to appoint women police, which thie N.C.W. has been requesting for the past twenty-five years. Also that the council's representations regarding the restriction on the importation of pernicious literature had resulted in 'the stricter censorship of literature coming into the country, and that the council's representations regarding housing were receiving favourable consideration. During the year a new branch had been formed at Ashburton, and steps were being taken in the formation of a new branch at Whangarei. It was also hoped to form a branch at Napier. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss E. A. Chaplin, of Christchurch, for her work as editor of the N.C.W. page in "Woman Today." The matter of a "platform" for the N.C.W. was left in the hands of the Dominion officers to draw' up a tentative one. The president urged branches to endeavour to arrange broadcasts in their districts. It was decided to ask Miss I. M. Jamieson, who is now in England, to represent the N.C.W. at a meeting of the International League against War and Fascism. The resignation of Mrs. Cocker as convener of the peace and disarmament standing committee was received with regret, and it was decided to thank Mrs. Cocker for her services. « ™ resolved to ask Mrs. Milligan, of Christchurch, to accept the convenership. The Parliamentary watch committee presented a very interesting and comprehensive report, which showed that this committee has been very active. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Dallard (convener) and the members of her committee for their work. The Dominion secretary's report was read, and Miss Cooper was, thanked and congratulated on her very interesting resume of the work of the council during the past year. The financial statement was read, and Mrs. McNair (Dominion treasurer) was thanked for the manner in which she had lookoi after the finances. A vote of thanks was passed to the hon. auditor, Miss A. Hasten (Auckland). It was decided to ask Miss E. A. Chaplin, of Christchurch, to edit the History of the National Council of Women of New Zealand. . Several suggestions were received regarding the part that it was felt the NCW should take in connection with the Centennial celebrations. X_ was decided that at the end of the PanPacific Conference in January, 1940, an "NOW. Day" be arranged to which N.C.W. members attending the conference be irivited. .
