WASTE ON PUBLIC WORKS

The Minister of Public Works had challenged anyone to point t.o one instance of waste on public works, said Mr. W. Appleton, the National candidate for Wellington Central, at Roseneath last night. "I say that thousands of pounds have been wasted, and wantonly wasted, on public works, and I will be very willing to take Mr. Semple---and not very far from Wellington—and point out to him examples of waste," he said. Money was being wasted upon minor road straightening, work through farm properties for the benefit of motor traffic years before that need really arose. There was- no need to spend thousands upon the road through Ngahauranga at the present time and to spend a million and a quarter upon a tunnel through the Wairarapa hill was absolute, wanton waste after hundreds of thvusands had been spent on the road over the hill. The South Island main trunk would never pay its way. It was all very well to spend thousands on power machinery, but the expenditure could not be justified if the works were not worth while.
