Kent, who appeared for Smith, applied lor bail, and stated that Smith was anxious to return to Brisbane to clear up the charge. If, in the meantime, he could have his freedom, it would assist him in his defence. Smith was first seen by detectives four months ago in connection with the charge, and since then he had remained at the same address. If he had intended to abscond, it was submitted that he would : have taken steps to do so long before this. The accused was traced as the result of activities of Detective W. Ritchie, said Detective-Sergeant Doyle, and following that the Brisbane police were communicated with, and sent a cable message instructing the issue of proceedings and the obtaining of a provisional warrant. "The amount involved," said Detec-tive-Sergeant Doyle, "is £8000. and any little delay that may have occurred was caused by the police over there having difficulty in tracing the other persons mentioned." The remand was granted, and bail was fixed at £300, with two sureties of £150. •
