Union Company won the annual Rugby match agianst Combined Companies by 12 points to 9 (two tries and two penalty goals to three tries). The match, which was played at Day's Bay, was the twenty-seventh annual fixture and Union Company have now won eleven times. The game was hard and even, with not a great deal of open play. The last try of the day, a try by Sheldon for Combined, was an excellent piece of back play, however. The teams were:— Union Company.—Newton, Longmore, Pocknall, Broad, Martin (captain), Gill, McConchie, Corbett. Roberts, Bryan, Bannerman, Bruce, Hindle, Blackie Taylor, Braddock. Combined Companies. — Hunter, Logan, Sheldon, Fraser-Tytler, Barton, Cunningham (captain), Short, Copeland, Barnett, Wilson, West, Brown, Shorter, Orr, San do. The Combined team, served by heavier forwards, had most of the ball, but their backs chiefly ran across the field. Their best players were; Cunningham in the backs and Barnett in the forwards. Union Company's best players were Bryan, Newton, and Long[more. . Taylor and Bannerman scored tries for the Union Company and Bryan kicked two penalty goals. For the Combined team the scorers were Sheldon, Brown, and Barnett. Mr. E. G. Taylor was the referee.
