WELLINGTON BOYS

NATIONAL TOURNEY

NEWSPAPER COMMENT

Following are some of the comments, which appeared in the "Poverty Bay Herald" during the conduct of the National boxing tourney at Gisborne, regarding the Wellington representatives, particularly:—

"One of the 1937 champions suffered defeat on the first night, this being J.Parker, Wellington, who this year moved from the bantamweight class, in which he was the title-holder, to contest the featherweight section. He struck a toughened veteran in G. Thomas, Taranaki, who seemed to have the fight in hand.all the way, despite a strong rally by Parker in the third round.

"A tip about T. Dunn, 9.6£, Hutt Valley, forecast his early success against M. O'Neill, 9.5£, Wanganui, and before the first round was out the Wanganui boy was flat on his back. A heavy right punch, nicely timed, did the damage, and though O'Neill came up in time to see the round out on his feet, Dunn did not take long to clinch the match once khe second round was started. He won on a technical knockout, and his style must have given other lightweights in the tournament something to ponder over.

"If an award had been called for on the first evening in connection with the Jameson Belt, for the- most scientific boxer, it probably would have gone to Dunn, who in addition to skill and style has a powerful wallop in the right hand. Thomas, Taranaki, also would save received, consideration.
