Instead of being transferred to WaJ nganui as had been intended, J. L. r Griffiths, Wellington and New Zealand ° Rugby representative, is to go to HastJ ings. It is understood that his move 1 to the staff of the branch of the Bank " of New Zealand there is a temporary " one. He left today. ! The Onslow Cricket Club held a function last evening as a farewell to Mr. ■ J. L. Griffiths, who, although not so > famous a cricketer as he has been a 1 footballer, has nevertheless done yeo- ' man service for his district club in the ■ cricket field over a long period of years. : Mr. W. H. Gledhill, president of the club, who presided over a very large 1 gathering, spoke in glowing terms lof the fine qualities of the guest of honour. The president was supported by Messrs. E. I. Bull, captain of the club's first eleven, in which Mr. Griffiths has been a leading batsman, Mr F. C. Gentry, who spoke on behalf of the district generally, Mr. W. Webb, representing the Onslow Football Club, Mr. J. H. Phillipps, chairman of the Wellington Cricket Association, and Mr. D. Law, who brought a message of good will from Johnsonville. Musical and elocutionary items were contributed by Messrs. A. Bradshaw, J. McKeown, J. Wakelin, and M. Rickard, while Mr. C. Sproule gave a conjuring display, and at the close of the function the chairman presented Mr. Griffiths on behalf of his elubmates with a set of crystal. In returning thanks, with characteristic modesty, for the gift and the good things that had been said about him, Mr. Griffiths said that although he had been fortunate enough to achieve the highest honours that one game at least could bestow he realised that the strength of all games depended not upon the few who reached the top, but upon the rank and file who kept ! the game going, and he would always be grateful to those who, while not so favoured as he had been, had in their own way done so much for the sports in which they were all interested, and had given, him their support and encouragement throughout his career. .
