FINALS REACHED
AMERICAN DOUBLES
CHAMPIONS HARD PRESSED
(Received August 27, 12.15 p.m.) BOSTON, August 26. The finals were reached in the na- , tional lawn tennis doubles championI ships today. The Australian Associated Press agency states that in a semi-final of the women's doubles the Australians Misses Wynne and Coyne were eliminated in thirty minutes. The pair did not function as a team and, with tactics thrown overboard, the stroking of the Continental stars Mme. Mathieu and Mile. Jedrzejowska proved superior. The two Australian pairs in the men's semi-finals played merely an ex[hibition game. In the other match Budge and Mako met Allison and van Ryn, and Allison provided the day's tit-bit. The first three sets produced routine tennis, but the final set was a classic. The veterans, who were attempting to make a come-back, seemed to be too nervous and treated the champions with the greatest respect and played defensively for a start. When the score was 4-0 in favour of Budge and Mako in the fourth set, how-) ever, Allison sprang into dynamic activity, volleying and driving with wicked strength and superb accuracy. He completely overshadowed Budge, repeatedly winning points with balls down the side-lines or between his opponents. In a hectic twenty minutes the score was taken to 5-5, and then to 8-8. Three match points were saved before the finish. It was a very bril- [ liant individual exhibition. Van Ryn throughout was a broken reed, otheri wise the veterans might have won. The close call will not increase the confidence of Budge and Mako for the final tomorrow. Results are:— Men's Doubles. —Semi-finals: Quist and Bromwich beat Hopman and Schwartz, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3; Budge and Mako beat Allison and Van Ryn, 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Women's Doubles.—Semi-finals: Mme. Mathieu and Mile. Jedrzejowska beat Misses Wynne and Coyne, 6-4, 6-2. Mixed Doubles. —Third round: Budge and Miss Marble beat Kovacs and Miss Wolfenden, 6-4, 6-3; Hopman and Mrs. Hopman beat Wood and Miss Workman, 6-3, 7-5; Bromwich and Miss Coyne v. Van Ryn and Mrs. Allison 6-2, 2-6, 6-6. The game will be resumed tomorrow.
