SURF LIFE-SAVING

MARANUI CLUB

TOP OF THE LADDER

Seldom have so many Dominion, provincial, and inter-club surf life-saving trophies been displayed together as j were seen on' the table at the recent i presentation ceremony and club night held by the Maranui Surf and LifeSaving Club. The trophies represent;ed three first and four second placings in the New Zealand championships, seven firsts, two seconds, and two thirds in the Wellington provincial championships, a West Coast title, and three inter-club contests. A large gathering of club members, officials 'from the surf and swimming executives, and members of other clubs attended the presentation, which took the form of a social evenings Mr. A. H. Ross occupied the chair. In proposing the toast of the club, Mr. P. F. Coira, president of the New Zealand Surf Live-Saving Association, said that the club well deserved its successes. It was known as one of the oldest, most efficient, and most consist* ent clubs in the movement, and since its formation 27 years ago had always been in the forefront of surf life-sav-ing. On the administrative side, the Maranui Club had rendered great service, and was second to none in New Zealand. This year, the training and discipline which was always manifest had borne fruit, and the. club had prospered in the competitive field. Com? petition in efficiency was a fine thing, and operated so as to bring each club up to its most effective pitch. This year the club had reached the top of the ladder in competitive work. He wished it success in the future. Mr. Ross said that the club had come a long way in its 27 years, and that he did not think it had lost any of its original enthusiasm. There were plenty of younger members to take their place in teams and in executive positions as the old ones dropped out. Mr. J. Kober, whose membership dates back 26 years, said that the rivalry between the Lyall Bay and Maranui Clubs had done more for the] surf life-saving movement than had any other factor. The Wellington .Swimming Centre' had formed the first surf >cliib in the Dominion, and the Maranui" Club was founded when several members broke away from the original club and started a separate organisation. He hoped that the friendly rivalry would, always Gontinue, as while it did.- both clubs would surely remain iri the top flight, . •;'.,-■..
