A WELL-BALANCED FIELD

("By Ariki Toa.")

The first of the season's three-year-old classics will come up for decision at Hutt Park next month,: when the Wellington Trotting Club will hold its Spring Meeting, and judging by the final payments for the event, a thrilling contest is likely to be provided. ; . The initiative of the Wellington Trotting Club in inaugurating this evezit last season has been weil rewarded, and'the race seems certain to bec6r 2 a permanent attraction. The idea was born just on three years ago, and, with the spade work finalised, it was decided to run the first contest. at last season's Spring Meeting. The success of the race was guaranteed when four of the leading three-year-olds in Two'i Loose, Sandusky, Horse Power, and I Refund lined up, without taking into consideration the additional two start- | ers. As a spectacle the race proved ; everything that could be desired, and although Refund was responsible for a mild surprise this did not detract from the merit of the win. It is perhaps a trifle disappointing o that leading youngsters in Bed Rock,' I Special Edition, and Shadow Son were- " not entered, but it is another instance ' ipf. a costly oversight on: the part;6f 1 f r u c°nnections earlier. This is borne °V|t by the fact that both the owners ,ol Special Edition and Shadow Son made inquiries prior to the final forfeitsSSE . ing due, which suggested that in both v for horses would have been Paid an even dozen still hold ST £r 7 oUnd ' and they embrace the ; material to provide, a thrilling-contest; - At first glance it is hard to pick anyhing ll> ely to account for Aldershot, whose formlasi} season lent colour to " the contention that he was little, if anything, below other youngsters in that rterm. : He has been ■ .sparingly raced, and his only success was .attain^ -■• ed in the Juvenile Stakes at Canterbury Park. However, impressions . gained from the event suggested that he possessed great possibilities, and he looks like .being the first classic win- ; ncr of the season. He will probably " be given an outing at New Brighton next week when a line may-be gained--■> on his prospects at Hutt Park. .. Revision is a nice type of pacer by Jack Potts, who has improved a great' deal with the experience she had last season, and southern critics predict a promising term for the filly. Centaurus, who is owned locally, but trained by R. B. Berry at Addington, has shaped encouragingly in his few essays, -and Worthy, Empress, from the same stable, has plenty of speed, but is not a good stayer. - -. ■ ■: ... ■' Rosalind Maid created a fine impression when she ran fourth in a handicap event at Riccarton where the Westport Meeting was held. She is a welldeveloped filly who is sure to be all the better for the experience. Virginia Girl, in the same interests, has yet to appear. She is a half-sister to Refund and Taxpayer, being out of Nyallo; Wainoni Girl and Zingarrie should be all the better for their outings last season, and the unnamed colt by Loch Moigh from Tui Wildwood is showing encouraging ability.
