DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND

Sir, —This defence business is very puzzling, and there is urgent need for clear thinking and more precise definition. The Government has repeatedly and emphatically declared that the New Zealand land and air forces are for defence only. Not long ago the Hon. Mr. Nash declared that if Britain is at war so are we, and the Hon. Mr. Perry has ridiculed the suggestion that New Zealand should never again send an expeditionary force overseas. And now the Hon. Mr. Fagan says: "If Britain were at war then, in a split second, New Zealand would also be at war.' Answers to the following questions may help to clarify the position: —
Does this last statement mean: (a) That Britain's part in any future war is bound to be a righteous, just, or defensive one (whether these terms may be applied to any participation ia war
