TAXATION AND RACING
Taxation collected from racing by the Government during the current season amounts to tfoe fabulous sum of over £400,000, not including the amusement tax, mentioned Mr. J. S. McLeod ia his address to the annual meeting of racing delegates this morning. Not only does the Government receive this amount directly, but the indirect revenue from the railways for race.train traffic and the carriage of racehorses, and also through other channels, amounts to a very considersum. Once again the Conference asks for the repeal of the increased taxes that it agreed to -for a period during the difficult time of the Great War and from which it has not been relieved.
Generally, racing dubs during the season have experienced the most successful period for many years past. The increased stakes have been-a great help to all concerned, but the * future- does not look so bright if racing clubs are to be burdened with much feigner costs in the upkeep, of their courses and general expenses of race meetings.
