LIVESTOCK MARKETS

MOST CLASSES DOWN

Prices -for cattle, as well as; most other classes of stock, were generally lower at the livestock sales held in the Dominion this week. Ox beef receded another shilling a hundred pounds at Westfield yesterday. It is 11 months since a similar range of values, to 375, ruled at Auckland. A smaller entry lacked quality and steers declined by as much as 15s a head, but cows and heifers sold at firm late rates, tending to improve. The largest supply of sheep for some time more than fulfilled requirements and the slack demand resulted in a considerable reduction in values for medium and Tarifinished sheep, good quality grades Trot reflecting the decrease in the same measure. A small entry of calves resulted in prices increasing by 5s to 10s a iiead. Competition was particularly Iceen. Pigs were scarce and light baconers and all porkers improved in value by about 8s a head. There was only a small proportion of good quality fat cattle in the entry penned for yesterday's stock sale at Burnside, the remainder being medium descriptions, with cows and heifers predominating. Competition was keen from the start, and prime sorts rose by £1 |o £1 5s a head, while medium sorts were firm at late rates. The entry of stores included a line of stationbred steers from the Lakes district, which in keen competition brought to £9 15s. Wethers were in short sup- i ply, only a few trucks of prime qual- ] ity sheep being forward. Extra heavy! sorts met with a good demand at late rates, but the market for all other descriptions was erratic. JOHNSONVIIXE SALE. Wrght, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report that an average yarding of all classes of stock was offered at the Johnsonville sale yesterday. Bulocks consisted chiefly of light weight and in- ! ferior quality* only a few pens of good! quality coming forward. Prices for good quality cattle were down about 10s, while other, sorts met with a dull sale, and were hard to sell. The cows and heifers were of good quality, and sold at prices showing no alteration. No runners or vealers were offered. The wethers yarded were of good quality, and sold well at late rate's. Ewes were of mixed quality, prices being down by Is ahead on last week's rate. There was a large yarding of lambs, only good quality sorts being sought after.
