MANX SOCIETY

The annual concert of the Manx Society was held in the Rechabite Hall, Willis Street, on Saturday evening. These functions, held.each year during the month of July, celebrate the Manx National, or "Tynwald Day," when the laws passed by the Isle of Man Legislature during the preced-' ing twelve months are promulgated with quaint ceremony on a small artificial hill in the centre of the island..l On this occasion, as is usual, Manx ] items predominated on the programme. Mr. L. L. Moore (president) presided over a large attendance of members and friends. The proceedings were opened by . the singing of the Manx National An-j them, the first verse of which was , sung in Manx Gaelic by the Rev. A. M. Costain. The following items were then contributed:—Solo, "The Fisher's Song," Rev. A. M. Costain; reading in Manx Gaelic, Mrs. Kelleway; solo, "In a Little Old Garden," Mrs. Pengelly; Manx folk song, "Ramsey Town," audience; duet, "Vannin yeg veen," Misses J. and B. Kirk; reading, "The Pazons (T. E. Brown), Rev. A. M. Costain; Manx dialect play, "The Charm," by Mr. A. Quayle, Miss Con. Kelly, Mrs. Paterson, and Mrs. T. C. Southward; Manx folk song, "Elian Vannin," audience; solo, "The Manx Wedding," Rev. Mr. Costain; song, "Hunt the Wren," Messrs. Watterson, Oates, and Southward, Rev. Mr. Costain; Pan-Celtic Anthem, audience. The accompanists were Mrs. H. E. Perrett, Mrs. Paterson, and Miss B. Kirk. Supper was handed round by the members of the committee, and the National Anthem was sung.

Rattling windows in motor-cars are often a source of annoyance, and the tendency is increased if the window is open, as is usually the case in mild weather. Effectual window-plugs are not easy to procure, the space between the glass and the frame being too wide for the usual size of plug sold for this purpose. Successful plugs can easily be made from cycle brakeblocks. They yield readily to a rough file and can be reduced to wedgeshape in a few minutes.
