LICENSING LAWS A CHECK

Stating that the tourist traffic to New Zealand was of so much value to the country that steps should be taken to encourage it, the Hon. V. A. Ward (Wellington), when speaking in the Legislative Council yesterday, advocated amendments to the licensing laws and to the labour laws. The 40-hour week was interfering with the tourist traffic by preventing accommodation houses from providing meals when they were wanted, he said, and ho thought something should be done to make it possible for the provision of services similar to those in other countries. The majority of the tourists who came to the country were accustomed to more liberal licensing laws than existed here and the Government should consider making some alterations.
