STRAINS OF CARBINE
Grantley,' the South Australian steeplechaser who was penalised 101b by the V.R.C. handicapper for the Grand National Steeplechase as a result of three successive wins in Adelaide, has had a meteoric rise. He was not tried over steeplechases until March. He is said to possess brilliance and stamina, and the latter asset probably comes from a double cross of Carbine in his common pedigree. Grantley is by Paving Way from a mare by Antol. Paving Way is by the American-bred horse Green Seal from Veloxite (imp.), by Carbine from Wenonah (dam of Pistol), by Galopin. Green Seal was by Greenan, who traced to Sunshine, the ancestress of Limond, and his dam was Goldfinch, the sire of Chelandry, ancestress of Heroic. Antol was by St. Anton from Pistol Queen, who was by Pistol, a son of Carbine and Wenonah, by Galopin. He has therefore a cross of Carbine, and three strains of Carbine's sire, Musket, for Pistol Queen was a granddaughter of Limber, who was by Light Artillery, a grandson of Musket. With such stout lines Grantley should have no difficulty in running out the distance of the Grand National at Flemington.
