ROADS & TRANSPORT

TRAMS TO MORNINGTON Passenger transport and reading needs were ,the chief subjects of discussion at the annual meeting of theVogeltown and Mornington Electors' Association. Mr. J. Russell presided.

The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that the disadvantages of the Mornington bus service were fully realised. A report upon transport developments was to be made to the council in the near future, when the needs of the district would receive full consideration. In the meantime, if the demand warranted more buses they would be made available.

The chairman remarked that far more people were using the buses than a few years ago and that at peak hours trams and buses were quite inadequate to meet the demand.

Mr. Hislop replied that that was recognised and new trams were being built.

Referring to a request for a Sunday and holiday service, Mr. Hislop said that at present £7000 a year was being lost on Sunday transport, but the matter was under review, and he believed that the population now demanded the service. The need of attention to Farnham Street was discussed, and a suggestion was made that the council should take advantage of the Government subsidy on labour to have the work carried out. Councillor W. Duncan, chairman of the reserves committee, congratulated the district upon its progress and gave an assurance that the committee would assist any club or association which was willing to help itself. Councillor W. J. Gaudin said that Mornington Road had been laid out twenty-five years ago as a .tram track and his opinion was that trams to Mornington were now justified. He hesitated to suggest a loan for street works at the present time. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. J. Russell (re-elected); vice-president, Mr. A. France; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. Sherbrooke; committee, Messrs. A. Carter, C. Dryden, J. Davidson, A. Garwood, H. Gregory, R. Holland, R. Haymer, W. Jenning, and W. Jamison. j
