A JOVIAL EVENING

NATIONAL CLUB PARTY

The National Club was crowded in all the reception rooms last night when a welcoming party was given to the National Party members of the House of Representatives, as well as to some of those who have been chosen to stand at the next elections.

Bright decorations included browi baskets of beautiful gold and pale yel low Iceland poppies with brown bird to set them off, also narrow troughs o merries and foliage, with late chrysan hemums also, arranged effectively, li he entrance downstairs and up th( tairs were baskets of bright-berriet iolly, and the Union Jack was drapei n a prominent position. The guests were received by th< ijew Zealand president of the party to. C. H. Weston, K.C., and Mr. Guj rolinston, president of the club. Th< oast of "The King" was proposed bj tlr. Johnston, and then that of th< National M.P.s. _ Among the latter were the Hon. J J Cobbe (Oroua), Messrs. H. S. S. Kyit Riccarton), Senior Whip, W. J. Broad oot (Waitomo), Junior Whip, W. r Sndean (Parnell), W. A. Bodkin (Cen ral Otago), K. J. Holyoake (Motu »ka), and S. G. Smith (New Ply nouth). These seven guests of honou: vere introduced by Mr. O. C. Mazen <arb. Each made a brief speech 11 •eply, thanking the club for its hqs )itality, and those present for then ,upport. Five-minute speeches were ilso made by Mr. Barker, Mr. Irvini Masterton). and Mr. Veitch (Wangamit) was also welcomed. A very amusing topical song, comrosed and sung by Mr. Cheviot Bell chairman of the Wellington commitee) to the strains of "Wrap Me Up In ily Old Stable Jacket," caused great imusement, all the "hits" being thormghly appreciated by the audience, jiss Beresford was the accompanist. ?he Hon. Adam Hamilton was unable o be present all the evening, but came n late, and had a rousing reception. The committee, who, together with he president, were hosts at the recepion, were Mrs. Graham Robertson. Wrs. G. F. Stone, Messrs. H. F. Toorood, O. C. Mazengarb, H. G. Graves, L W. Budd, W. B. Matheson, G. Y. Berry, Grant Taylor.
