JERSEY THROWN IN

REFEREE'S PROTEST

ATTITUDE OF SPECTATORS

A white jersey was thrown on the table at the weekly meeting of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Referees' Association at Dargaville signifying a referee's refusal to control further matches in this district, states the "New Zealand Herald" of today. This stand was taken by Mr. L. H. Sumpter, a comparatively new arrival from the South Island, who refereed a match between the northern and southern seniors at Te Kopuru on Saturday when hooting was indulged in by some of the spectators. He made it clear that he had not resigned from the association. "After the demonstration by a section of the public at Te Kopuru, I feel I have other and better things to do than teach a section of the Te Kopuru spectators football manners," stated Mr. Sumpter. "I have never seen such a disgraceful exhibition as that shown by some of the spectators and by children. It is most unfair to ask a rrferee to go to Te Kopuru and be subjected to such treatment." Mr. Sumpter said he had no complaint to mak& regarding the players. He had brought the matter forward in the hope that the association would take some action. The chairman, Mr. W. H. ClifEe, expressed the hope that Mr. Sumpter would continue as a referee. He assured Mr. Sumpter that any action taken by a referee in matches would have the backing of the association, and that spectators would be shown who was in control. The association set up a sub-commit-tee to draft a complaint to the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union, requesting that steps be taken in the matter. seeoeeeoeeeeeeeeeeesssoeee
