IMPORTED POTTERY

COMPULSORY BRANDING

LEGISLATION SOUGHT

Importers and representatives of British potteries in New Zealand as well as the English manufacturers are concerned at the extent to which foreign manufacturers are copying British productions and placing them on the market unbranded.

The matter has been taken up by the United . Kingdom Manufacturers' and New Zealand Representatives' Association with the Bureau of Industry, Department of Industries and Commerce, and an investigation is being made, it was stated today, into the question of the provision of legislation to enable interested parties to apply to the Minister for an order making it compulsory for imported pottery goods to be indelibly marked with the name of the country of origin.

"There is a great need for legislation similar to that existing in the United Kingdom and most of the British Dominions for the compulsory marking of certain classes of imports, when application is made for it," said the secretary of the association (Mr. N. H. Russell) yesterday. New Zealand, he believed, was the only British Dominion where it was, not compulsory for imported pottery to be branded with the name of the country of origin. The association was doing everything possible to see' that the necessary legislation was passed, and believed that it had sufficient evidence to convince the authorities of the merits of the pronosal. .
