UPPER HUTT W.D.F.U.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

The Upper Hutt branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union recently celebrated its sixth birthday by giving a most enjoyable party in the Silverstream Hall. There was a good attendance of members and friends. Among those present was Mrs. Brown (president of Lower Hutt branch).

The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and coloured streamers and a cheerful fire blazed in the sup-per-room, contrasting pleasantly with the winter conditions prevailing outside.

Excellent dance music was supplied by Mrs. H. Edwards. Mr. M. Cottle ably carried out the duties of Master of Ceremonies.

Items which gave much pleasure were rendered by Miss Edna Gorrie (elocutionary), Mrs. Jeff cote (vocal), and Messrs. Clyde, Tomlin, Chapman, and Griffiths (male voice quartet), the last-named being accompanied by Mrs. Tomlin. The secretary, Mrs. Frank Scholes, read a letter expressing the good wishes of the president, Mrs. Hawthorne, who is at present on holiday in North Auckland.

Mrs. Morris (vice-president) welcomed the guests and thanked those who, by contributing items, had added greatly to the success of the evening. Mrs. Collie (also a vice-president) gave a brief explanation of the various Home Science competitions held during the year and then called upon Mr. George Cottle (president of the Upper Hutt branch of the Farmers' Union) to present the trophies to the members gating the highest number of points. The trophy winners were Mrs. Harold Scholes, 22 points, and Mrs. Morris, 21 points.

A happy feature was the cutting of the birthday cake by Mrs. Bentley, sen., who was the oldest member present. The six candles on the cake were blown out by the youngest member of the division, Miss May Collett. A delicious home-made supper was served.

The winners of the competitions held during the evening were as follows:— Monte Carlo, Miss Humphries and Mr. A. Horn; paper hat competition winners were Mrs! McGregor and Mr. Bentley.

A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
