LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

RETROSPECTIVE SPEECHES

A meeting of the League of Mothers at Hataitai was held recently, when members were given an inspiring and helpful talk by the Dominion president, Mrs. C. White, who was accompanied by Mrs. L. Wall. The hall looked very cheery with large bowls of autumn flowers and foliage, and Mrs. C. Peterson, who presided, gave everyone a warm welcome, especially visitors from Greymouth and Lyall Bay, and opened proceedings with the league's hymn, followed by the prayer. The choir, under the baton of Mrs. Davey, gave much pleasure with their glees. The soloists were Mesdames Marshall and Stirritt. For their final numbers they rendered two duets, which were enthusiastically received. Mrs. Binnie gave two recitations, which also were well received. The performers were the recipients of gifts of flowers. Mrs. White choose for her talk "The Story of the League." The league had, she said, grown from small beginnings to nearly 8000 members in these few

short years. What the world needed today was men and women of religion and good will, who would train their children, see that their boys and girls had nice companions, and that their literature and entertainments were beneficial to them. The league was a place where they met as mothers and home-makers.l It was not a substitute but a foundation for other things, and embraced mothers of all sections and denominations. Mrs. White was accorded hearty applause. Mrs. L. Wall spoke briefly, and both speakers were presented with posies. Tea was served.
