NUN'S SUDDEN DEATH
MOTHER MARY JOSEPHINE
By the sudden death of the Hev. Mother Mary Josephine Kenny, at St. Leo's Convent, Devonport, Auckland, the Order of the Sisters of Mercy has lost one of its best known and most distinguished members, states the "New Zealand Herald. She had devoted her 45 years m New Zealand to the work of Catholic education in the Province of Auckland. Mother. Mary Josephine had been a Superior in almost all the convents of the.Sisters of Mercy in the diocese and,. as Mother-Geiieral of the Order for six years, she worked wholeheartedly and with complete success for the enlargement of the works of the order and the increase of its subjects For the latter cause, she visited Ireland in 1922, returning with a large contingent to assist in the educational work. •• . . In a tribute paid to her memory at St Mary's Convent, Ponsonby, it was stated that Mother Mary Josephine, since coming from Ireland in 1893 at the request of Bishop Luck, had devoted her noble life and brilliant talents to the service of the poor, the sick, and above all, to the training in religion of youth. She had always been an outstanding figure in the work of Catholic education in the Auckland diocese.
