YOUNG KAURI FOREST

r A GIFT DECLINED i J It is reported in Auckland papers that surprise was expressed at a recent meeting of the Whangarei County Council at the attitude of the Minister in Charge of Scenery Preservation (the Hon. F. Langstone) in not accepting a gift of about 250 acres of young " kauri bush at Waipu. This bush, known as McKenzie's i Bush, was worked out many years ; ago, and now there is a splendid showI ing of young kauri trees, some of which have more than fifty years' : growth. i The chairman of the council, Mr. ,J. ' A. S. McKay, said the bush was the . finest area of natural kauri reaffores- • tation in New Zealand, and he could not understand why the Minister had not accepted the gift. An anonymous I donor was prepared to give £50 to- ■ wards the cost of fencing the area. The council decided to approach the Minister again, requesting that the Government should accept the gift of the area. This matter came up at a meeting of the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society last week. The president (Captain Sanderson) said that he would make inquiries.
