LABOUR AND PROGRESS
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—While it is to be regretted that "Old Age Pensioner and Labourite," who replied to my earlier letter, finds the present pension insufficient to meet demands, I think it reasonable to point out that the Government is not to blame for the increase from 6s to 12s 6d per week for room rent. House and room rentals, like produce, are governed mainly by the demand for them. Therefore, it can be fairly stated that the Government is not responsible for such rises. Incidentally,
the rents for houses and rooms in Weilington are the highest in the Domin-j ion because the accommodation is so limited and the demand §o heavy. May I suggest that it would be as well for the correspondent to bear in mind that next year the superannuation scheme will be in operation which will assure everybody over 65 years, provided that the income does not exceed £ 1 per wfeek, an allowance of £1 10s weekly.—l am, etc.
