BEAU PERE'S MATES

MARES FROM DOMINION

The phenomenal success of the imported sire Beau Pere in New Zealand this ■ season has influenced several breeders to send mares to Australia to be mated with this son of Son-in-Law. Arrangements have been completed by Mr. C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, to send several of the Dominion's outstanding matrons to. Beau Pere next season. These mares include Entreaty, the dam of Phar Lap, owned by Mr. F. Armstrong, of Christchurch; Zarene (by Chief Ruler), the dam of Lowenberg, winner of the New Zealand Derby, and her half-sister, owned by Messrs. T. J. and P. A. O'Neill, of Wanganui; Cymene, dam of- Cylinder (New Zealand Derby), owned by Mr. H. D. Greenwood, son of the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood, who raced Gloaming; two mares who will be sent by Mr. W. Hig'gins, of Wellington; and Comedienne, dam of the Wellington Cup winner Royal Artist, and who will be sent by Mr. R. T. Reid. The lastmentioned breeder previously sent a mare to Australia for mating with Heroic, but the union proved fruitless. ' Beau Pere was bought in England by Mr. J. Donald for his Westmere Stud at Wanganui, and-when that establishment was dispersed in 1937, Beau Pere was bought by Messrs. W. J. and A. E. Smith for the St. Aubins Stud, New South Wales, for 3300 guineas. His progeny raced for the first time this season. In New Zealand, they won more races than the stock of any other sire in' his first season. In Australia he was ably represented by horses that had been secured at the New Zealand yearling sales, including Beau Verre and Bonheur de Perre. His list for the 1938 season is now full at 200 guineas, a fee that has not been exceeded by any sire in Australia. The practice of sending mares from New Zealand has in the past proved successful. Gallantic, a winner of the Adrian Knox Stakes, was the progeny of Heroic and a mare sent from New Zealand. One of the Dominion's best two-year-olds this season, Te Hero, by Heroic; is from the mare Prodice, one of the most successful in the New Zealand Stud Book. Te Hero, by the way, is being sent to Sydney in July for preparation for the spring races, and will be accompanied by Gay Son, one of Beau Pere's best sons in New Zealand this year.
