A JUMPER FOR DRESSY OCCASIONS

For-dressy occasions, this uncommon jumper : will be quite distinctive. The pattern presents no difficulties. The design in the newest and favourite shades is confined entirely to one side only of the jumper, it is part of the knitting, arid consists of three graduated blocks, each a different colour. These begin above the welt on the seam side, and are knitted one above the other, upwards and across. The lowest block, the blue colour, is 2Jin in depth and width. The next block, maze, is 2Jin in width and depth. The cyclamen 2Jin in width and depth. The blocks are begun at the side seam of the right-hand side of jumper. These 3 blocks are the main feature of the jumper. They are knitted in k. 1. p. 1, keeping to that rib in contradistinction in the jumper pattern and sleeves, which are knitted in a lovely shade of forest green, and the following pattern:— Ist row.—X. ' ■ , ■■ ; 2nd row.—P. 3rd row.—X. . '. ' 4th row.—X. sth row.—P. 6th row.—X. These six rows complete the pattern. The welt is knitted in k. 1, p. 1. The Front.—Commence at lower edge by casting on 74 sts., which should measure 14Jin and work welt in k. 1, p. 1 for 3Jin with No. 9 needles. Materials.—6oz of 3-ply super Scotch fingering, loz each of maize, blue, and cyclamen, all in deep rich tones, 6oz are in the forest green. Nos. 8 and 9 needles, 1 crochet hook.

Tension. —10 sts. to the inch. When 3£in of welt have been knitted change to pattern.

• On the second row, on the righthand side seam cast on the blue and k. 1, p. 1 for 2Jn across. Let wool hang down and continue with green and the pattern given. Change the wools on the end of block.*, by giving a twist round each firstly. Increase 1 st. each end of needle in the 12th row and every 9th row following, until there are 90 sts. on the needle. When work measures 13Jin shape armholes by casting off 3 sts. at beg. of next 6 rows.

Work on without further shaping until armhole measures 4in. Divide the sts. into 2 equal parts, and work each one separately. X 10 rows.

Shape the neck by casting off 2 sts. at beg. of next 6 rows at1 neck edge, work until armhole measures 7in. Cast off 4 sts. at beg. of next 6 rows at armhole edge. Join wool at neck opening and work the other shoulder in the same way.

The Back.—Follow instructions for front, excepting that there are no blocks made, the back being knitted entirely in green and the pattern

fiven. When the arm-hole measures in, shape, the shoulders by casting off 4 sts. at beg. of the next 12 rows. Cast off remaining sts. Sleeves. —• Commence at • lower edge by casting on 52 sts. which shoulS measure 10£ in and work cuff in K. 1, p. 1 for 2£in. Increase by 1 st. on each side every sth row for 30 rows. At the end of the 30th row, the sleeve is 4f in long. Shape the Top as follows.—Cast off 2 sts. at beg. of next 6 rows. Decrease 1 st each end of needle every other row until 24 sts. remain. Cast off. The collar is of green entirely. Cast on 72 sts., which should measure 14iin, and work the collar in k. 1, p. 1 until it measures l£in. Finish with a firm edge in d.c. i \ .
