AUTUMN BLOOMS

SHOW AT NORTHLAND

The autumn show of the Northland Horticultural Society was held in St. Anne's Hall;on Thursday.

; Chrysanthemum: blooms were few in number, but somU.very fine< specimens were shown byiMr. E. C. Gamble.

; There was a gdSff collection'6l other cut flowers of all descriptions, which gave a very pleasing effect tothehall. The decorative section was well. patronised, the autumn tints displayed being magnificent.*. The outstanding feature was the show of.. vegetables,' : which were brought front far and near. It was the largest collection ever -seen at Northland: The judging was a. difficult matter, the competition being so keen.

A large display of school work for exhibition only was shown by the Northland School and in all the departments was of a high standard. The writing, drawing, and sketches were excellently done. There were several innoyations in the children's work, which showed that the school is being run on very progressive lines. The children themselves were keenly interested in it, and the parents and other visitors were full of admiration.

The show was opened in the evening by Captain Holm, who congratulated the society on its efforts and brought "before the notice of those present the importance of the combination of the beautification of the city generally with the efforts made by people in their private gardens. The prize list was as follows:— '. Chrysanthemums.—L. Butler, 1 first; E. C. Gamble, 2 firsts; Mrs. Lain, 1 j second. E. C. Gamble also showed the champion bloom. ■Cut Flowers.—Mrs. Bush, 1 second, 1 third; Mrs. De Blois, 2 seconds; Mrs. AUington, 2 firsts, 1 third; Mrs. F. S. Grant. 2firsts; Mr. P. Guilfoyle.a second; Mrs. Lain, 1 second; Mrs. Morris, 1 first; Mrs. Millan, 1 second; Mrs. G. S. Nicoll.l first, 3 second, 3 thirds; Miss A. Packwood, 2 firsts. Mrs. F. S. Grant, was the winner of the" Batchelor-Cooke Memorial trophy for most points in cut flower classes at the November, January, and April Decorative.—Mrs. Bush, 1 third; Mrs. F S Grant, 1 first, 4 secondSj 2 thirds; Mrs. Morris Jones, 5 firsts, 2 seconds, 2.. thirds; Mrs. yon Keisenberg, 2 firsts; Mrs. G.
