CORPORATION EXPENDITURE

Brooklyn -.residents ,attended a meeting-last night "at which ,the Citizens' Committee candidates spoke on that suburb's share of' the city expenditure, in xview of the . forthcoming local body elections, an.d also touched on' the hospital extension proposal. Mr. J. Goldsmith1 presided. , •

,f The Mayor (Mr. T.',C. A. Hislop) spoke of negotiations proceeding in regard to Till's corner,'- and spoke of a-'report by the General Manager of the Tramways, which should clear matters up. Bemarking that circumstances made it difficult sometimes to keep promises, Mr. J. M. McLean, who isistanding for the council, said he intended to advocate sound business control of the Corporation's activities. The building of houses should be left to private enterprise. Transport was in a transition stage. The present system should be maintained and extensions made with the best new method that would work with it.

Mr. J. D. Sievwright, candidate for the Hospital Board, said he was in favour of decentralisation, smaller hospitals being more efficient than very large institutions.

Agreement with the appointment of a commission to inquire into future hospital development was expressed by Mr. F. 'A. Waterhouse, candidate for the Hospital Board, who suggested that the possibility of the establishment of a convalescent home, a hospital at Lower Hutt, and a children's hospital should be examined by experts. He submitted that such a move would improve. the health services of the community, as well as being an economy.

Mr. M. W. ITiew and Miss A. Kane, who are candidates for the Hospital Board, also spoke briefly on the advisability of investigating other development proposals than the projected extension of the existing institution.

Mr. R. W. McVilly, candidate for the council, also addressed the meeting.
