COLLEGIATE BALL

WANGANUI, April 19.

The first big dance of the season in Wanganui y^as the-'Easter"-ball arranged by the old boys: of the. Collegiate School.. Visitors were:present from all parts of New Zealand, and the function was quite a social reunion. This year Woodford House old girls ;■ were responsible for the supper. The .entrance hall was arranged as: a lounge with easy chairs ■ and greenery and flowers. The names of the houses were set over the various archways. Supper was served in the school din-f: ing-room, where tall gold candles and: autumn flowers wer'e'used to decorate" the tables.

The committees were:—Messrs. E. P. Richardson (president, Wanganui branch 0.8.A.), J. McFarlane (hon. sec), J. Goss, R. Handley, G. Burgess, M. Bourne, L. Donovan, and A. Talboys. (Woodford House), Mesdames T. Latham, S. Barton, and Misses B. and J. Wilson, and A. Smith.

Mrs. F. W. Gilligan (wife of the headmaster), wearing lacquered satin in ivory, gold, rose, and blue tonings, received the guests, among whom were the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland^ Bishop of Wellington, and Colonel W. H. Cunningham (president of the Wanganui Collegiate School Old Boys' Association, of Wellington),; and Mrs. Cunningham. .

There were eight debutantes, who were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Gilligan by their mothers after the first dance. They were Misses C. Annabell, in stiffened silk net over satin; E. Fitzherbert (Marton), in crerne cloque taffeta; J. Stewart (Ohingaiti), Victorian' frock of pale pink eire lace over silver lame; B. McKnight, white satin; M.'; Wollams, white taffeta;. J. Barton, white taffeta; J.,Barstow, ivory rippled nirion; and J. Donald, white rose patterned lace.

Although Easter Monday morning was cold and miserable, in keeping with the rest'of the holiday period, the afternoon was sufficiently fine to enable the annual sports to be held at the Collegiate School. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Gilligan welcomed the visitors, and afternoon tea :was served in the school dining-room. ■;■ After the heavy rain, the ground was too sodden to allow record times to be achieved, and many of the events—such as the championships could not be finalised until Tuesday, as Saturday was too wet for the usual preliminary events to be decided. Rodie and Miss Mollie Rodie were Mrs. Duncan Simpson's, guests at Marion for the Easter holidays.
