NOTES FROM NEAR AND FAR

Complete arrangements have been made for, broadcasts in connection with the visit to Wellington next Sunday of the liner Empress of Britain. When the liner enters the heads there will be a commentary from Mount Victoria, and from Pipitea Wharf there will be a description of the berthing of the liner, followed by brief interviews from the vessel .with some,of the passengers. From 12.45 to 1.45 orchestral music will be broadcast by the liner's orchestra. At 2.30 a description of the liner, relayed from various points, will be broadcast, and from 6 to 6.45 there will be another programme of music by the liner's orchestra.

Thq National Broadcasting, authorities have received from the Canadian Broadcasting Cprporation a series of recorded programmes for presentation' in New Zealand. Two of these will be used in the Good Friday programmes. From 2YA listeners will hear at 8.30 "The Romance of Sacred Songs," including the well-known hymn, "Jesu, Lover of My Soul," and from 4YA, at 8.30, the first of a series of programmes, "Within These Walls," will be broadcast.

Included in 2YA's programme for Good Friday is an Edmund Barclay play, "Thy Light Has Come." This is a dramatisation of incidents in the life of William Tyndale, who first translated the Bible into English. I

The Humphrey Bishop recorded pantomime, an Australian production, which was broadcast from 2YA at Christmas, will be presented again from 3YA on Easter Monday.

Racing enthusiasts will find much to interest them in an interview with the well-known New Zealand jockey, "Jimmy" Ellis. This will be broadcast from 3YA at 9.5 on Easter Monday.

The outstanding musical bro"«dcast of the Easter programmes will be the relay by 3YA from the Christchurch Anglican Cathedral of John Sebastian Bach's "Passion According to St. Matthew." The work is on a majestic scale, for solo voices, three choirs, and orchestra. The telling of the story is by a narrator, a tenor soloist. The choirs are used to amplify the narrative, as well as to assist in the unfolding of the drama. The accompaniments in the Christchurch Cathedral presentation will be played by Mr. Maughan Barnett, the organist and choirmaster of the Cathedral.

Mr. Frederick English, baritone, who will sing from 2YA on Sunday evening, has broadcast from most of the important stations of the world, including the 8.8.C., the National Broadcasting Company, the Canadian Radio Commission, Radio Paris, France, the Indian State Broadcasting Company, and many others. The programme selected by Mr. English for his 2YA broadcast on April 10 covers a wide musical range. He will perform songs by Schumann, Malashkin, Handel, Vaughan Williams, and Mozart.
