SOUTH MAIN TRUNK
NORTHERN SECTION
EXTENSIVE OPERATIONS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
BLENHEIM, This Day.
Construction work on the northern section of the South Main Trunk railway has reached to within two miles of Kaikoura, which point is roughly midway between Blenheim and Christchurch. The scope of the operations now extends over a length of 40 miles of the route on this section alone.
The men engaged on all classes of work total 410, a reduction of 40 as compared with the number five months ago. The falling-off is due to disposal of employees on other work, the majority of men, operating between the Clarence River, where a large bridge is being constructed, and Kaikoura.
