GOOD EASTER TRIAL

LOWENBERC AT STRATFORD

(Special from "Hurry On.")

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 4. Lowenberg registered a solid trial for the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton when he won the Anniversary Handicap at Stratford on Saturday. Admittedly he enjoyed the run of the race, but the manner in which he responded at the finish was convincing.

While Silvanus was setting the pace, Lowenberg was always beautifully placed on the rails in second place, with Wotan just outside him, and Burgess did not become alarmed when Silvanus increased her lead to five or six lengths half a mile from home. As soon as Sargent gave Silvanus a breather racing round the turn, Lowenberg reduced the gap. Lowenberg was not asked for his effort until a furlong from the post, and he responded in solid fashion to be going away at the finish.

Silvanus made Lowenberg's task a difficult one over the last six or seven furlongs. He was conceding her two stone and could not afford to relinquish, the good position that he had when the field settled down. Silvanus was not stopping in the straight, but Lowenberg's class prevailed. The Stratford course with its 'long uphill straight presents a real test, especially. to a horse carrying 9.0, and Lowenberg came through it in good style. He has a stone and a pound less to carry at Riccarton and should be capable of giving a good account of himself.

It was strange to .find Wotan right up alongside Lowenberg in second or third place in the early stages, as he' is usually at the tail of the field. With little pace on for the first three furlongs he was able to maintain his place without any trouble, and when Silvahus clapped on the pace racing down the back it appeared that the race was being run to suit him. Houieyer, when Lowenberg went after Silvanus approaching the straight entrance Wotan could not go with him and dropped back into fourth place. He was never going like a winner over the concluding stages, even though he still held his own with those behind him to finish fourth. It might not be wise to condemn him on this defeat. He had had little fast work, and in addition did not appear to appreciate being kept up to his work when the pgee was switched on going down the back. Moreover, he was forced to come on the rails, whereas in ,all his best races he has come on the outside of the field from a long way back.
