TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

i*.-Wairarapa Easter nominations are 'due on Monday.

Minor nominations for the C.J.C, Easter Meeting are due on-Friday.

Sunee's scratchiness at Manawatu last Friday was due to the presence of a splint.

It is probable that L. J. Ellis will ride' Haughty Winner in the Great Easter and Galleon in the Great Autumn.

Alunga should not be long in making amends for his ill luck at Awapuni on Saturday. The Laughing Prince filly Ecstatic showed enough in her initial -race at Awapuni on Saturday to indicate a very early success.

R. C. Penman is expected to transfer from Otaki to Trentham next week or the following week. Mr. A. H. McGuire, clerk of the scales at Feilding, will be- unable to officiate at the Easter Meeting, and his place will be taken by Mr. D. Stevens whp acts in that capacity for the Manawatu Racing Club. Nocturnus broke down badly at Oamaru last Wednesday, and, according to L. J. Ellis, it will be a long time before he races again, with considerable doubt whether he will ever stand.up to another preparation. B. H. Morris had two exasperating rides at Awapuni last week. One was on Smoke Screen in the Cup and the other on Sigurd on the final day. Luck of the running in these cases was hopelessly against him. If Rehearsal goes on the right way during the next three weeks he will be a hard one to down in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, In which he will be opposed by Surmount, Russian Ballet, Arvakur, Olympus, and others. .

During .an interval between races at Oamaru last Saturday Kinnoull was galloped six furlongs. He broke away just inside the six-furlong post, and travelled two furlongs from a slow start in 26 2-ssec and six furlongs in lmin 14 4-ssec. The last half-mile was run in 48 2-ssec. Kinnoull was allowed to ease up towards the finish, and the next two weeks' work should bring him into racing shape. The Feilding Jockey, Club has made arrangements wth the A. and P. Association for the use of a piece of land so that it will be possible to have the seven-furlong barrier moved to allow a straight run down the back, as at Awapuni. It is hoped to have the new starting post ready by the spring. This is a badly needed improvement at Feilding, where, the present sevenfurlong start is on the turn,
