Special forecast for Wellington:—
Moderate to strong and at times squally north-westerly to westerly winds. Weather cloudy and overcast with warm and humid conditions. Rain probable.
The forecast for the Dominion as a whole issued by the Meteorological Office at noon today is for northerly to westerly winds prevailing but backing at times to south-westerlies in the southern half of the South Island, moderate to strong generally and occasionally reaching gale, force in exposed positions about and south of Cook Strait, a more general southerly change setting in from the south during tomorrow. Weather mainly fair in eastern districts from Canterbury northwards, otherwise cloudy to overcast and in places misty with -rain- at times and some heavy falls in western districts from Taranaki southwards. Temperatures warm, but a cool change in the south tomorrow.
A series of waves of extensive westerly depressions continues to cross the southern portions of the Dominion, but pressure is now rising over South-east-ern Australia. Northerly to westerly winds have predominated and have been strong in places about and south of Cook Strait, and at times of gale force in the latter area, but mainly light to moderate over the northern half of the North Island. In Westland some heavy falls were reported. Westport had I.67iri, Greymouth 1.31 in, Arthur's Pass l.lOin, and Puysegur Point 2.11 in. Temperatures have remained very warm, and conditions generally humid.
At Auckland yesterday the morning was cloudy but the afternoon was clear. A light westerly to south-west-erly breeze prevailed. This morning it was still fine.
It was warm in Wellington and the sky mostly cloudy with a north-west-erly gale blowing. Sunshine amounted to 6.9 hours. The maximum temperature was 73 degrees, and the minimum 66.1 degrees.
In Christchurch cloudy weather prevailed with a strong and squally north-westerly wind prevailing throughout the day. The maximum temperature was 89.5 degrees, and the minimum 62.7 degrees. At 9 a.m. todayit was calm and clear.
At Dunedin the weather was fine for the most part, but there was a shower about 3 p.m., and rain fell during the night with a north-westerly breeze. Thirty-six points of rain fell. This morning it was fair with a moderate northerly prevailing.
