MOONLIGHT SPORTS

AMATEURS AT BASIN

HILL BREAKS WORLD RECORD

The feature of the moonlight sports meeting at the Basin Reserve on -Saturday evening was the successful attempt by Alex Hill, of Wellington, on the world's sack-racing records over 75 and 100 yards, previously held by R. Mercer, of Rochester, and J. A. Finn, of Brooklyn, New York, respectively. Hill, handicapped by an injury, broke Mercer's record of 10 4-ssec, established in 1904, covering the distance in 10 l-10sec, and lowered Finn's time of 14 l-ssec, established in 1929, to 13 3-ssec.

It was a brilliant effort on the part of the Wellingtonian and might do something to bring about a revival of this particular race, which is an athletic event. under international rules. The result of the evening must have been disappointing to the sub-com-mittee of the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A., who had gone to considerable pains to make the programme attractive. The meeting had been postponed from the previous week on account of rain, and the unpleasant conditions which prevailed on Saturday were responsible for the rather disappointing crowd. As it happened, the evening turned out beautifully fine, and, considering the heavy track, the times put up were, in most instances, exceptionally good. A. L. Fitch, the American coach, gave an exhibition sprint over 120 yards, which he covered in 11 2-ssec. Fitch went "away to a brilliant start and but for the track being heavy, woulld have registered phenomenal time.

Other prominent athletes taking part in,, a , comprehensive programme of events included C. Robinson, Wellington sprint champion, A. R. Nilson, mile champion, A. J. Mackay, three-mile champion, and J. Sutherland and A. Gochrane, regarded as prospective champions. : During the evening Mr, Alf. Jenkins and his troupe entertained the spectators with acrobatic turns, between items. Musical items were also rendered.
