HUTT VALLEY NEWS

RAILWAY WORKS EN FETE

(From "The Post's" ReprosontaTive.)

Many an appraising eye viewed the doubtful weather conditions on Saturday morning, but fortune ever favours the adventurous, and the decision of the committee of the Lower Hutt Railway Workshops and Stores staff to carry on with their picnic met with a well-merited reward in mild and fair weather conditions which prevailed throughout the day. at Trentham racecourse, where over 2000 adults and children thoroughly enjoyed a delightful outing. ■ Special trains from Wellington and Waterloo conveyed this record gathering to the racecourse, where the people's stand and surrounding grounds and course adjoining (.provided for the occasion by the Wellington Racing Club) formed an ideal spot for, both children and grown-ups to disport themselves in games and sports, and, most thrilling of all, in racing events on the racing track itself. On entering the gates, fruit and sweets were dispensed to the children, and during the day a seemingly endless supply of ice cream, cool drinks, and sweets was freely distributed, while all the little ones under five years were made ■ happy with gifts of toys. Luncheon was a pleasant alfresco meal under the trees, and afternoon tea was provided from the canteen. The Lower Hutt Municipal Band played a well-selected programme of popular music which was greatly appreciated. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Railways, attended, and addressed the assembly in the luncheon interval. With the official party were Mr. G. H. Mackley, C.M.G. (General Manager), Mr. E.
