GROWING INTEREST
CONSTITUTIONAL LEAGUE
COUNCIL'S APPRECIATION
At a recent meeting of the executive, council of the Constitutional League, appreciation was expressed by the members present at -the growing interest being taken in the activities of the league.
Owing to several conflicting interpretations of' the political purposes of the league, as revealed in the great number of letters in the correspondence columns of the Wellington dailies, the executive wishes to state once again quite clearly the true function of its league:— I.—The Constitutional League is not a political party. 2.—lt does1 not exist in order to promote the interest of any political party today. 3.—lts true purpose is to epdeavour, by discussion and public meetings, to awaken the people of New Zealand from their political apathy and to make them realise that our British democracy can be retained in all its greatness only if the people will take a keen individual and collective interest in the political problems and their alternative solutions that abound today. ■ ■. ■ . ■ . ' 4.—The Constitutional League is decided upon the fact that Socialism as an economic and political system is impracticable and that any form of State absolutism —whereby the State takes too much control over industry, and the 'individual—is intolerable to British character and must be outlawed before its insidious growth destroys the morale of our people.
's.—The league believes that Socialism and democracy are incompatible'and hopes :to organise the people of New Zealand to fight politically against any political party that attempts to use Parliament as a means of destroying our British democracy.
6.—The league draws no class distinction, but believes that all economic sections within New\> Zealand can, and must, be treated fairly so far as economic reward and individual liberty are. concerned. 7.—Any political party that fails to consider the fair and just treatment of all sections of the community Will meet with vigorous opposition from the Constitutional League.
