FAST RAIL-CAR TRIP

1 UNDER 10 HOURS FROM

AUCKLAND

A fast trip to Wellington was made yesterday by the rail-car "Arai-Te-Uru," which conveyed the General1 Manager of Railways (Mr. G. H. Mackley) and his officers over this route on an inspection trip in the actual running time of 9hr 45min for 426 miles. The performance, Mr. Mackley aaid today, had equalled the most optimistic expectations. Weather conditions were perfect and the trip demonstrated the suitability of the car for the tourist traffic. It left Auckland at 8.35 a.m., and reached Wellington at 7.35 p.m., after making stops aggregating 75 minutes. ■ . . , The name of this rail-car is that ot one of the large sailing canoes which brought the ancestors of the Maoris to New Zealand. Their traditions say that it made its landfall on the east coast of the North Island and was sailed down •to Shag Point, near Moeraki, where it capsized, scattering its cargo of kumeras along the beach. All the I&rst group of rail-cars are named after canoes famous in the early history of New Zealand.
