VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE

SYDNEY, February 2.
The Riverview Observatory, reports that a most violent earthquake shock, which displaced seismograph instruments, was recorded at-about 5.15 a.m. today. The disturbance was estimated to have occurred about 2180 miles northwest of Sydney in the region of vAru Island, in the Arafura Sea, off the southern coast ol New Guinea. Severe tremors -were -felt at Darwin,, where houses were shaken. (Received February 3, 9 a.m.) ' ■ . LONDON, February 2. Mr. J. J. Shaw, the West Bromwich seismologist, recorded a very severe distant earthquake, beginning 7.25 a.m., on February 1 and. lasting two hours. - i It is believed it was in the bed of the Pacific Ocean. (Received February 3, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, February 2. The seismograph at C^nisius College recorded a violent earthquake yesterday afternoon which was estimated to have ■ occurred approximately 9500 miles from New York, in the general direction of Australia. , ■*»■.•■ The' shock shook the needle from the recording roll, and was the severest recorded in ten years.
