YACHT IN CYCLONE
TRANS-TASMAN RACE
AURORA STAR WITHDRAWS
(Received February 3, 12.20 p.m.)
SYDNEY, This Day. In a message from Lord Howe Island, Mr. H. E. Terry, skipper of the yacht Aurora Star, tells of his crew's experiences in a Tasman cyclone. For seventy-two hours the yacht was hove to in a fierce'southerly gale which blew her more than 400 miles off her course. After leaving Auckland light winds were encountered to the Three Kings, where the craft was becalmed for two days. Squally -conditions followed, culminating in heavy cyclonic weather against which the yacht could not battle. It was impossible to proceed to Hobart, so the engine seal was broken and the yacht retired from the race, making Lord Howe Island under power. .. . Mr. Terry said that although thex Aurora Star was subjected to a severe' gruelling the situation was not dangerous at any time. All the members of the crew reached Lord Howe Island in good health. They expect to sail for Sydney on Friday. ■ The' only other competitor in the race, the Wayfarer, also withdrew, returning to Auckland after meeting adverse weather. (
