HUTT SCHOOLS

•VISIT OF INSPECTION

Schools in the lower part of the Hutt Valley were inspected, on Tuesday by the chairman of the Wellington Education Board, Mr. W. V. Dyer, Mr. Jas. Stonehouse, a member of the board, and Messrs. W. I. Deavoll (secretary) and Dewhirst (assistant secretary). Good progress is being made with the new school at Waterloo which is expected to be ready for occupation in about a month. The question of the appointment of'a "staff presents a difficulty because it is not known when the Government houses will be ready for occupation. Though a strain is being thrown on the accommodation at the Waiwhetu school1 pending the opening of Waterloo, the position has been relieved by the renting of a hall. At the Randwick school some work on the grounds will be carried out as opportunity allows. . Pending a decision by the Government as to a change of site, the board is spending as little as possible on the building and grounds at the Petone Central school. The Minister of Education • (the Hon. P. Fraser) and the Hon. W. "./ . : The improvements made recently at the Petone West school grounds by the Public Works Department are giving entire satisfaction. The enrolments at this school are exceptionally high, and the remodelling of the school, with the addition of two rooms, was approved. -..-'. The party inspected the two new temporary rooms at Hutt Central, and though these do not do away with the necessity of having a class in the Technical School, condition have been greatly improved. A start has been made with the preparation of plans for a new school to be erected on the site now being used as a whippet racing course. The headmaster and mistress of the (Eastern Hutt school expressed pleasure at the vast improvement effected by the remodelling of the infant rooms of this school. No accommodation difficulties were found at the Epuni school, but the effect on this school of the erection of Government houses and the provision of the new school at Waterloo is hard to estimate. ; '. The enrolments at Boulcott school were found to be well maintained, but the improvements made last year have provided ample accommodation. The party's last visit was to the Taita.school and very favourable comments were made on the tidy conditions prevailing in.the grounds and in the school. Indeed, the party found that the grounds at all the schools were well kept. ■".•.'
