WORKING MEN'S CLUB

The ■■ annual tourney for. the chess championship of the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute was concluded on Saturday evening. Ten of the twenty competitors- were eliminated by section play, the ten finalists being Messrs. Beyer, -Gneiss, Hardy, Bosher, and H. Anderson from Section A, and Messrs. Kelling, Fuller. | Fairburn, McClure," and Hirter from i Section B. The two leaders, Messrs. Beyer and Kelling met in the final round on Saturday evening, when the latter won at the thirty-first move after having extricated himself from a tight corner in an interesting game which presented difficulties for both players. The club's title is, therefore, still held by. Mr. F ; K. Kelling, who was the club's pioneer champion when the first tournament was held 48 years ago. Mr. K. Beyer takes the second prize, and Messrs. Gneiss, Fuller, and McClure are leading in the race for the third rung on the club's ladder. Since a chess championship shield was presented to the club by Mr. J. Pressley, a former chairman for chess and draughts, it has been won six times by Mr. Kelling, and once each by Messrs. J. Lindsay, K. Beyer, S. Faulknor, and E. E. Hicks. The club's annual handicap chess tourney has been won by Mr. K. Beyer, from the scratch mark, with the good tally of 7 wins and a draw. The next • best scores are those of Messrs. H. M. Rosenberg and ,W. J.. Cornish.
