WORK ON THE CLYDE
r Clyde shipbuilding- is looking forward to 1938 as the best year in the rJost-war records of the industry; On hand there is £50,000,000 worth of ri aval {tonnage, and the mercantile work on the order-books of the Clyde yards is reckoned at 500,000 tons. During.l937 the yards floated 112 vessels aggregating 378,210 tons. : This was the best year sinde 1930, when- the output exceeded 500,000 tons; The aggregate for Scotland—44o,ooo, -' tons—is ■ much greater than the output of the three main English 'shipbuilding centres, Wear;"»Mersey, -.and- Tyn.e. .; In "addition to the two battleships, each costing £8;000,000, building in the yards of 'Messrs. John Brow.n- and'.'Messrs; ,;Fairfieldrthe- Clyde has- six- cruisers on hand,^ twenty ".destroyers,, .two' depot .ships, r.and' yaripus" smaller; craft, .^layal tonnage 'launched, ■.during .the. ye^r included tw;elve "destroyers, a cruiser, a depot ship, a submarine; and numerous smaller craft.. Among the. merchant ships launched were 22 cargo steamers, 11 cargo motor-ships,, five passenger motor-ships, two passenger steamers, nine motor-tankers, and 13 coasters.
The Maryborough Aero Club's.. Waco, piloted by Mr. A, Crichton, with Misses M. Horton and P. Gilbert-as passengers, arrived at Rongotai from Blenheim at 12.35 p.m.. today.
