CONSTABLE APPROACHED

"Drink appears to be the cause of his downfall," said Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle, prosecuting, when William Francis O'Brien, a labourer, aged 64, was charged in the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., with being a rogue and a vagabond in that he begged for alms in Cuba Street, he having been previously convicted as idle and disorderly. At 3.35 p.m. yesterday, said Detec-tive-Sergeant' Doyle; Constable Vasta was on duty in Cuba Street, and he was accosted by the accused, who asked him for 6d. The request was refused, and the constable followed O'Brien up Cuba Street and saw him ask two persons for money. When he was arrested he had Is lOd in his possession. The defendant had a long list of convictions, said DetectiveSergeant Doyle, but not for serious offences. '

It was stated that the accused had been employed for some time for 91 hours a week, for which he had been paid 21s. The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months.
